We got a router a few weeks ago, and I've been battling the bastard for a long time now. Anyway, it's a Netgear WGR614v6. I swear to God after the researching I've done over the past few weeks, I think I know more about portforwarding and static IPs than the whole lot of you put together. I'm not bragging, I just want to impress on you how much NO, IT'S NOT A PROBLEM OF MY NOT KNOWING HOW TO FORWARD PORTS AND SET UP A STATIC IP!!! "You probably did something wrong when you were forwarding ports, or you didn't set up a static IP properly" seems to be the standard answer, no matter how many times someone stresses the fact that they did everything step by step and it's not POSSIBLE they did something wrong.
My problem is as follows. In order to be able to download torrents, I forwarded ports for Bitcomet and uTorrent. The former is 26060, the latter 31231. I adjusted settings in my router so that my computer always gets the same IP every time I turn on my laptop, as do the other 2 computers in our household. The thing is, the ports don't stay forwarded! Sometimes they turn on, sometimes they turn off. I thought there was a pattern but no, it's completely random.
One day I will fire up uTorrents and hey presto, the port is correctly forwarded (uTorrent has it's own port checking page, where I check both ports. Bitcomet shows you what kind of connections you have, if they are only Local, the port is closed, if you have Remote as well, it is open). I fire it up again another time, the ports are closed and refuse to open whether or not I have torrents running.
I unplugged my router for a moment just now, then plugged it back in. The ports remained open for a total of about 15 seconds. They they closed. Other times, they remain open for the whole day. I really don't understand it and wish someone could explain to me what is going on and what, God forbid, I'm doing wrong.
The worst thing is when the ports are open, I have no problems with the internet, but when the ports are closed, my torrent speeds fall dramatically and I'm unable to use the Internet, because the torrents hog up the browser's port opening.
Please help T_T I'm going insane.
ETA: The funny thing is, my port forwarding works almost like port triggering. I just unplugged my router, then plugged it back in. The port was closed, but opened the moment i fired up uTorrent. So it's like the program triggers the port to open, but that's not the point of port forwarding!! It's still open, I'm waiting to see when it will close for no reason.
ETA2: The port hasn't closed yet. However, turning off uTorrent closes the port. Restarting uTorrent doesn't open it back up again.

I've put the full list in my journal, in case you want to see...
